Philippe Barnes graduated from the University of Limerick in 2008 with an MA – First Class Honours in Irish Traditional Music Performance.
Since then he has toured all over Europe & America playing flute & guitar with the David Munnelly Band. Ireland, France & Germany with London Irish band Crossharbour & Australia with his Celtic Jazz-Funk group All Jigged Out.
Three-time runner up in the BBC Young Folk Awards, Philippe was featured playing whistle and flute on Amy Dickson’s platinum selling album Dusk & Dawn. He joined her and the London Chamber Orchestra live at the Royal Albert Hall for the Classical Brit Awards. A regular TV flautist, he has appeared with Shakira for MTV 5-Star, Ellie Goulding & The Proclaimers at the NTA awards and Bryn Terfel at the Royal Variety Performance among others.
A World music flautist, he is equally at home playing Celtic music, flamenco and jazz. As part of Oud virtuoso Attab Haddad’s band he has performed several times at the London Jazz Festival. Philippe’s love for Irish Music led him to write a book “Irish Music on the Silver Flute” which shares all his secrets for making the silver flute sound like a traditional Irish Flute.
He released his debut solo album “An Feochan” in 1998, and since then has performed on many recordings for other artists including The Attab Haddad Quintet, The Lee Westwood Ensemble and Dizraeli & The Small Gods. As well as two duo albums of his own celtic inspired compositions with pianist Tom Phelan.
Philippe has performed three times at the British Flute Society Convention and presented flute days across the UK. Recently he has given workshops at the NFA in Orlando, and the Swedish Flute Teachers Convention in Skövde and performed at the World Wind festival in Gyeongju, South Korea, and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
