Biography

Fang-Yu Huang graduated from the Department of Music at National Kaohsiung Normal University, and earned her master’s degree from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

She studied under Yen-Fang Lin, Wen-Yuan Lin, Hsiao-Pei Iris MA, Zhe Hu(Principal Flutist of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra), and Taiwan’s flute pioneer Man-Nong Fan. She has also received guidance from renowned flutists such as Gary Schocker, Jean-Michel Varache, Judith Mendenhall, Denis Bouriakov, Trevor Wye, Vincent Lucas, and Seiya Ueno.

During her university years, she served as principal flutist of the NKNU Symphony Orchestra and was named one of NKNU’s Rising Stars. She achieved outstanding results in the National Student Music Competition (College Division A, Flute Solo). While still in school, she performed with the Tang Lü Flute Ensemble and the Kaohsiung Youth Symphony Orchestra, and was invited to perform in Tokyo, Mainland China, and throughout Taiwan. In 2016, she won first prize at the Shanghai Solexa Flute Competition.

In 2018, she was selected as a Zarin Mehta Fellow and traveled to the U.S. to perform with the New York Philharmonic. During her studies, she was also invited to participate in concert seasons and festivals with the Hangzhou Philharmonic and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. She received further mentorship from Robert Langevin (Principal Flute, New York Philharmonic), Mindy Kaufman (Flute and Piccolo, NY Phil), Yoobin Son (Flute, NY Phil), Wolfgang Ritter (Principal Flute, NDR Radiophilharmonie), and Megan Sterling (Principal Flute, Hong Kong Philharmonic).

In 2019, she joined the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra on its world tour, performing at the Lucerne Festival (Switzerland), BBC Proms (UK), Edinburgh International Festival, Wolf Trap Festival (USA), and Ravinia Festival (USA).

From 2019 to 2024, she was a flutist and piccolo player with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

In 2020, she won first prize in the chamber music category of the North International Music Competition (Sweden), and first prize in both flute solo and duo categories at the Moscow International Music Competition (Russia).

In 2021, she won second prize in the final round of the E-Contest International Music Competition.

In 2022, she received the Platinum Award for Outstanding Performance at the Quebec International Music Competition.

In 2024, she was admitted to the in-service master’s program at Taipei National University of the Arts and the orchestral fellowship program of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) of Taiwan.
