Michael Alampi

It felt like coming home when I first discovered Altus flutes. My great flute mentors abroad all play Altus and when I first tried the instrument I knew it was a special flute that would allow me to further develop, express and share my artistic voice with the world.

Bio

Michael Alampi is a multifaceted musician and Altus Performing Artist. He studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music and in New York at Mannes School of Music and Manhattan School of Music.

He has played with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Radio City Orchestra, American Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of New York, Aspen Festival Orchestra, New England Symphonic Ensemble, New Jersey Festival Orchestra, Symphony in C, Orquesta Sinfónica del Encuentro de Santander under Krzysztof Penderecki, and on Broadway, among others.

Adjunct faculty in flute and chamber music at Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music, Michael teaches and coaches students from around the world guiding them on their own musical path. He has presented masterclasses, guest recitals, and lectures at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, Stephen F. Austin State University, Monmouth Conservatory of Music, and Yamaha Conservatory of Music.

A former prize winner of the Yamaha Performing Artists Competition, Michael held a Polonsky Foundation fellowship to the Aspen Music Festival and School. In 2019, he was awarded the Jo Weinberg Award from the Royal Academy of Music and the following year received the Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music.

His principal flute mentors have included Michael Cox, Judith Mendenhall, Elizabeth Mann, Karen Jones, Linda Chesis, Michael Parloff, Patricia Morris (piccolo) and Lisa Beznosiuk (Baroque flute).

Michael plays an Altus PS model flute and Miguel S. Arista headjoint.
