Austin Brown joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as Associate Principal Flute in the 2022 season. He has previously served as the Associate Principal Flute with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and as guest Principal with the Baltimore, Fort Worth, and Redlands Symphonies. Austin has also held residencies as a fellow at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Brevard Music Center, and Eastern Music Festival.
As a soloist, Austin has been awarded prizes from the Donald Peck International Flute Competition, the Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia’s Young Artist Competition, and the Carnegie Mellon University Baroque Concerto Competition. He is also a laureate of the prestigious Kobe International Flute Competition and the Aeolus International Wind Competition. Most recently, Austin has appeared as soloist with the Colburn Orchestra and local Pittsburgh new music ensemble NAT 28.
Austin is also very passionate about teaching and has held faculty positions with the Colburn Jumpstart Program and the Pittsburgh Flute Academy. He has also had the enormous privilege of giving regular guest masterclasses at his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon, as well as in the surrounding Pittsburgh area.
Austin began his professional studies under the tutelage of Trevor Wye, and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Carnegie Mellon studying with Alberto Almarza and Jeanne Baxtresser, as well as a postgraduate degree from Colburn studying with Jim Walker
